Day 18 – A Walk through Creation

Tuesday / a Rainbow for You

Read                   Genesis 9: 11-17 (NLT)

Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.” Then God said to Noah, “Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth.”

Think

I’ve read the lines from Genesis about the rainbow many times, and I love that God made rainbows as an everlasting sign of God’s covenant with all living things.  But I never noticed before that God clearly made the rainbow as a reminder for himself.  When there’s a rainbow in the sky, God is reminding himself of his promise.  It’s not there for us to remember what God has done.  It’s for God to remember God’s promise.

Now, the most interesting fact I know about rainbows is that no two people ever see the same one.  The way the colors are arranged, their location and appearance is relative to one specific point—that is, the location of the observer’s eyes.  From where you’re standing, you actually see a different rainbow than the person standing next to you.  So, no two observers see the same rainbow at the same time.

What this tells me is that when God shows me a rainbow, God is doing it just for me.  At the time I see the rainbow, God is remembering God’s covenant promise to me.  God literally makes each rainbow for one person.  So, next time you see a rainbow, be sure that God is thinking about you at that very moment.

Pray

God of rainbows, how can it be possible that you would think of me?  You are the Creator of the universe, yet you promise to love me and care for me.  I can never thank you enough for all the grace and goodness you’ve spread over my life.  Help me to know you deep inside my heart.  Be with me as I travel this daily journey of discovery with you, knowing you are always thinking of me.  Amen.

Do

I hope you’ve seen at least one rainbow in your life.  I learned early on that after a thunderstorm passes, if you stand with your back to the sun in the clearing sky and look at the dark clouds of the retreating storm, chances are that you’ll see a rainbow. What do you know about rainbows?  Do some research online, learn a new fact, and maybe find a glass prism to make one yourself.  If you don’t have a prism, there’s many other ways to do it.  Here’s just one of the many websites that can give you some great ideas for creating your own rainbows: https://www.rookieparenting.com/make-your-own-rainbow-science-experiment/.  Then admire your rainbow and thank God for always being with you.
